Walk Coordinator Mary Jo Knox said, "We are proud to say that our ALS Walk Committee works very hard at keeping our costs down to a minimum and we run the event almost solely on donation of product and services therefore being able to donate more funds to ALS Canada." Working alongside with the 14-member committee were 50 student and adult volunteers on the day of the event, plus local Kinsmen who supplied and barbecued the hotdogs. For the seventh year in a row, Dominos Pizza donated pizza for the crowd. Fifty local companies were Walk Route Sponsors and local merchants donated 150 items to the Silent Auction table. Sutherland Supporters, with Dr. Jeff Sutherland as captain, and The Murray Machine, with Scott Murray as captain, were the top two fundraising teams in all of Ontario. "We also had a strong show- ing from Team Jackie and Bruce's Battle, two other ALS clients that worked very hard in raising funds and awareness for our Walk," said Knox. Dr. Jeff Sutherland, on his own, was the Top Individual fun- draiser, bringing in over $50,000. "We are so appreciative of our community's participation and support of this very worthy char- ity and we are all hopeful that one day soon, ALS will be a treatable disease and not a terminal dis- ease," said Knox. JEFF SUTHERLAND Sex ed vote brings cops to Catholic school board meeting Police had to be called to last week's Halton Catholic District School Board meeting as tempers flared over a failed attempt to delay im- plementation of Ontario's new sex education curriculum in Halton Catholic schools. At the board's May 19 meeting, Oakville trustee Anthony Danko gave notice of his intention to present a motion requesting the new curricu- lum's deferral for one year. After last week's recorded vote ended in a tie-- effectively killing the motion -- Board Chair and Burl- ington trustee Jane Michael chose to break the tie and go on record as op- posing Danko's motion. Local trustee Mark Rowe voted no to the deferral. That resulted in a chorus of par- ents shouting "shame" enveloping the boardroom. "Parents know more about the pizza their child receives (at school) than they do about the sex education they receive." said Lorraine La Vigne, a Halton parent. Police were called to the school board's Burlington headquarters on Drury Lane as some disgruntled parents continued to yell their disap- proval and were slow to vacate the building.
