Oehrlein, a 16-year-old member of Gold Medal Gymnastics in Milton, placed second all-around on day one of the competition in the MAG Junior category with 14 other gym- nasts from across Canada to qualify for five event finals. In the finals, Oehrlein placed first on rings, floor and parallel bars to take the all- around title and bring home four gold med- als in his best results to date. It's likely that Oehrlein will be selected to compete in the Junior International Cup in Japan in September to go up against the top gymnasts in his age group from around the world. Teammate David Sandro from Acton trains alongside Oehrlein and had a suc- cessful competition as well, finishing second overall for first-place Team Ontario in the MAG Novice category. Destined for International Cup Two Georgetown residents who are members of the Starlight Destiny baton twirling team have qualified to represent Canada at the Interna- tional Cup competition set for Abbotsford, B.C. Aug. 1-9. Paige Runstedler, 16, and 13-year-old Olivia Denny have represented Starlight for five and six years, respectively, and performed on both the eight- and 13-member teams that col- lected gold and silver medals at the qualifying event in Winnipeg recently in order to advance to the International Cup. The top three teams qualified. Individually, Denny finished in the top half among 70 competitors in the solo and two batons categories, while Runstedler made the semifinals of the artistic twirl and was 0.5 points out of getting to the semis in solo. Denny and Runstedler also competed for the Starlight Destiny squads that earned a gold medal and two silver at the provincial championships in Oshawa. Also upcoming are the Canadian championships, which will also be held in Oshawa later this month. Photo by Eamonn MaherOLIVIA DENNY & PAIGE RUNSTEDLER
