Aleks Plackoski led the way with five gold medals (50m free, 100m free, 400m free, 800m free, 100m breast), a club record in 800m free, his first national quali- fication time, and to top it all off he won the overall 15-year-old boys high point trophy. Anthony Hartsink also had a big break out meet grabbing a silver and bronze in the 100m & 200m butterfly HHBF's girls' 15-and-over freestyle relay team of Shannon Jickling, Kath- erine Peel, Em- ily Collis and Nicole Waddick raced their way to a silver medal posting a club record. Waddick now heads off to study at the Uni- versity of Notre Dame. Jordan Stott earned silver in the 200m backstroke while Kathleen Reedman made her first finals and scored bronze. Emma Bisson- nette also made her first final. Nurse on board for Canucks' pursuit of reigning U.S. champs She won't be competing at next month's Pan Am Games in the Toronto area, but George- town's Cristy Nurse has some big interna- tional events this summer as a member of Canada's national rowing team. The 28-year-old Uni- versity of Ottawa law school graduate put her professional career on hold a couple of years ago in order to concentrate on her rowing for Canada's women's 8s team, which has had to settle for silver medals against the current World and Olym- pic champion U.S. boat. There is no 8s competition in the Pan Am Games so Nurse is in Europe and the Canuck 8s turned in an excellent showing at this past weekend's World Cup 2 races in northern It- aly, yet finished runners-up against the pow- erful Americans again. "I think we are pleased to be on the po- dium in this year's first international race, but not satisfied," Nurse, bow seat of the women's eight, following their performance. "We won't be content until we have that top spot," Nurse told the Rowing Canada website. "But the women's 8 field continues to deepen and I'm proud of my teammates for demonstrating that we remain a force in this event." Nurse is expected to row with the Canuck 8s at the British Royal Henley race next month and at the World Championships in France in August, which will serve as a qualifier for next year's Summer Olympics in Brazil.
