Christ the King Secondary School students had the opportunity to participate in the Ministry of Transportation-sponsored Road Safety Chal- lenge just before classes finished for the year. The challenge remains a community-driven event whose goal is to engage the participation of road safety groups and community members to work together to make Ontario's roads safer. CtK students involved in Student Govern- ment and Safe School Committee raised aware- ness of road safety issues, namely distracted driving and pedestrian safety though special activities throughout the week. Interactive activities focusing on distractive driving were held in the school's atrium, where students learned very quickly how texting and driving are dangerous combinations. Pedestrian safety was also on the list due to CtK's proximity to Hwy. 7, which is used by many transport trucks and commercial vehicles. Students were reminded about road safety tips such as the dangers of jaywalking, and wearing headphones while crossing busy intersections. Throughout all lunch periods, students who obeyed the road safety rules were stopped by staff members and were rewarded with Tim Hortons or McDonald's coupons if they com- pleted some surveys.
