As it was the long-hitting Sas- katchewan boy managed to finish fourth just two shots off the win- ning score. Hopefully he is warming up just in time for the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville July 23-26. In an earlier piece I talked about the importance of align- ment for hitting good golf shots. When playing the game of golf, knowing the distances you hit each club on average is just as important for getting close to the hole and scoring well. Whether you have an old set, just purchased some new clubs or are just starting out in the game, it is good to know how far you carry each club in the air to avoid haz- ards around the green. There are many ways to deter- mine distances on the golf course or at the range. Electronic gad- gets include laser rangefinders, GPS watches and handheld units, smartphone apps and even some that talk to you and let you know yardages. The old-fashioned way is to use yardage markers and pace off yardages. Whatever system you use it is good to know your distances in or- der to hit it closer and make more good scores.
