The preventative pro- gram targets standing bodies of water potentially breeding mosquitoes that can carry the virus. "Larviciding is just one part of our West Nile prevention program which includes public edu- cation, monitoring and surveillance, eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites and larvicid- ing," said Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Halton Region Medical Officer of Health. "By working together with the community to eliminate standing water sites and reminding people how to avoid mos- quito bites, we can reduce the occurrence of West Nile virus in our communities and help keep people healthy." Urban areas are more likely to have mosqui- toes that carry WNV. The types of mosquitoes that transmit WNV to humans most commonly breed in urban areas and in places that hold water such as bird baths, plant pots, old toys, and tires. A map showing the locations of standing wa- ter sites where larvicide has been applied is avail- able at halton.ca/wnv. To report standing water at a public facility or for more information about West Nile virus, please visit halton.ca/wnv, dial 311 or e-mail wnv@halton.ca.
