See photos pages 12, 18 Halton's Police Chief has declared that his police service is in Halton Hills to stay, putting to rest concerns that the community would lose its police pres- ence if a proposed new central station for north Halton is built. This was among the messages Chief Stephen Tanner delivered on Monday night in a presentation to Halton Hills council that also highlighted Halton's low crime rate and increased calls for service. Council recently passed a motion requesting that Tanner attend to discuss the proposed new District 1 station that is to serve as a single central facility for Milton and Halton Hills. While word of the new station raised concerns that the Georgetown station would close its doors, Tanner assured council that's not the case. "There will always be a police facility in Halton Hills," he said. "We are here in Halton Hills to stay." The assertion came as welcome news to those around the council table, with some pushing for extra assurance from the chief. "What we heard is the door (at the Georgetown station) will be locked, but you're saying maybe it's not locked?" asked Wards 3 & 4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal. Georgetown duo are for rent Rick Mercer and Drake are among the celebrity names that George- town residents Kris Chaput and Mi- chael Burton hope might take notice of their nifty new business plan. The pair are offering their ser- vices via a Kijiji ad to be passen- gers in order for drivers to use the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes during the upcoming Pan Am games. "There were a lot of angry people on Twitter saying 'this is so stupid, I hate the HOV lanes,' stuff like that," said Chaput. "And someone posted a picture with the two full lanes totally stacked, and then a full long beautiful HOV lane empty." So he decided to message a few friends with the idea that it would be funny for someone to make a business out of getting around the HOV rules, and Bur- ton took it a little more seriously than the rest.
