Email jpg with all the details to cgamble@theifp.ca WOW, THAT SKY IS A HOME RUN From our readers Concerned, Town, Region continue to monitor Hidden Quarry proposal Halton Hills Council and Halton Region have been monitoring the Hidden Quarry proposal near Acton at the northeast corner of Hwy. 7 and Sixth Line in the Township of Guelph/Eramosa. Why are we concerned? There are concerns about blasting, dam- age to well water and wetlands, and impacts from truck traffic. Ninety-five per cent of the quarry's trucks are expected to travel through Halton Hills along the provincially-controlled Highway 7. There are 26 two-way truck trips per hour proposed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Satur- day, for up to 20 years. A key concern with this pro- posal, and with the prospect of more quarries opening in the area, is Hwy. 7 cannot accommo- date the truck traffic, and there is no provincial plan to deal with these trucks. Creating quarries is mostly in the hands of individual pro- ducers. Current provincial rules are weighted in favour of creat- ing quarries over other provin- cial interests such as protecting groundwater and building healthy, safe communities. A quarry can be created with no consider- ation as to whether it is even needed. I have been taking action to change these rules and address concerns with Hidden Quarry. Council recently endorsed my motion calling on the Province to change the rules. I am meeting with MPPs and Provincial Min- isters asking: Why create more quarries if the aggregate is available in existing sites? Rather than keep creating new quarries on an ad hoc basis, let's use up material in existing sites in a planned and sustainable way before we create new sites. Currently, numerous quarries can be created in the same area with no ability to question cumu- lative impacts, including impacts from truck traffic. It is time to better plan for the sustain- able use of these resources and to protect communities from unnecessary quarry de- velopment. ****** On Monday, Sept. 21 a by-election will be held to fill vacant Ward 1 council seat. Can- didates can register on July 7. ****** Now that the warmer weath- er is here; please be cautious of walking in the woods by wear- ing long pants and sleeves. Those nasty ticks can spread Lyme disease. There are more and more cases every year in Ontario, including Halton Hills. If you want further information on Lyme disease, please visit the Canadian Lyme Disease Foun- dation at http://www.canlyme. com. ****** A big thank you to all of the volunteers who made Canada Day a huge success in Acton and Glen Wil- liams. Congratulations to Dale and Dave Cox, named "Glen Williams 2015 Citizens of the Year". ****** Congratulations to Pearly Whites Dental Hygiene clinic in Acton on their recent grand opening. ****** Keeping it real!
