In April, members of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA), which represents teachers in the province's publicly funded Catholic elementary and secondary schools, voted in favour of a strike if contract talks with the government and association representing school boards did not improve. Talks continued with the aid of a media- tor, but on June 24 the union filed for concil- iation. This step towards legal strike action was followed by a request for a "no board report." OECTA will be in a legal strike position 17 days after the "no board" report is issued, likely by mid-August. These latest developments in what has proven to be a difficult round of negotia- tions does not bode well for the start of the school year next fall. The union is accusing the Ontario Cath- olic School Trustees' Association, which is speaking for school boards at the bargain- ing table, and the Liberal government of try- ing to strip existing collective agreements. "Our members are standing up for what's right for the education system, prin- ciples the employer does not seem to be taking seriously," said OECTA president Ann Hawkins. The outlook for teachers in the province's public schools does not look any better.
