Boycott all in for L.A. Games Having picked up six gold medals, two silver and a bronze from her past two trips to the World Special Olympics Summer Games, Halton Hills resident Emily Boycott hopes to add to her display case this week as the 2015 event gets underway in Los Angeles with the opening ceremonies at the 84,000-seat Coli- seum on Saturday evening. Boycott, 32, is a member of the Oakville Butterflies' Rhythmic Gymnastics Team and will be competing in the ball, hoops, clubs and ribbon routines, which run from Monday to Wednesday of next week. She represented Canada at the 2007 Games in Beijing, China, where she swept the competition by winning five gold medals, and followed that up with a gold, two silvers and a bronze at the 2011 event in Athens, Greece. Boycott qualified for this year's Games by winning five gold medals in Level 4 at the Ca- nadian championships in Vancouver last year. In March, she was named a 2015 Canadian Down Syndrome Hero by the national organi- zation. Bulldogs win protest, extend series Just when you thought the Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldogs had rolled over and been swept out of the playoffs, it turns out their cham- pionship aspirations weren't dead after all. Due to the use of ineligible players, the Akwesasne Indians forfeited their post-sea- son victory against the Bulldogs last Friday and the second-round best-of-5 Ontario Jr. B Lacrosse League series resumed in Georgetown Wednesday night. Visit www.theifp.ca for the game report. The second-place Indians led the third- ranked Bulldogs 2-1 instead of preparing to begin their East Conference final series with the Oakville Buzz this weekend. Game five of the conference semifinal series, if necessary, would be played Thurs- day night at the Alcott Arena at 8 p.m. The Ontario Lacrosse Association ruled Tuesday afternoon that the Indians had used three affiliated players in their 15-11 game three win at the Alcott Arena from their intermediate team who weren't regis- tered with the OLA. Akwesasne also allowed an ineligible player to suit up in game one of the series on July 11 at the Turtledome, but because the Bulldogs didn't protest the issue right away, Akwesasne was able to keep the win. Fifth-place Oakville upset the top-ranked Green Gaels by winning their semifinal matchup with an 11-7 triumph in Bowman- ville on Sunday in the fifth-and-deciding game. Nurse on board for race victories Most members of Canada's senior women's rowing team have been competing in the Pan Am Games Regatta in St. Catharines, while Georgetown's Cristy Nurse and her eights' teammates were busy winning a cou- ple of major races overseas. The 2012 Olympic silver-medalist Canuck boat placed 1.5 seconds ahead of runner-up New Zealand at a World Cup race in Lu- cerne, Switzerland last week in a tune-up event for the World Rowing Championships in France next month. As well, Nurse, 28, teamed up with Jen Martins to place fourth in the women's pairs. The Canadian contingent also entered the Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames River in England and defeated a boat made up mostly of British national team members in the final to capture the Remenham Chal- lenge Cup earlier this month. Holt, Plackoski shine for Blue Fins The Halton Hills Blue Fins sent its provincial squad of 13 athletes to Ottawa to compete at the Ontario Age Group Championships and head coach Chris Henderson is thrilled about the local swim club's future. Ben Holt raced his way to four national times and will join Aleks Plackoski, who achieved three national times, in Quebec City to compete at the Canadian Age Group Championships at the end of the month. Other highlights included two new club records by Livy Olson in 100m butterfly and Plackoski in the 1,500m freestyle. Also, three relay records fell. Blue Fins who made their way onto the record board are Chris Zanewcyz, Simon Olsen, Anthony Hartsink, Brett Russell, Aleks Plackoski, Quinn West, Carter DeForest, Ben Holt, Emily Collis, Katherine Peel, Shannon Jick- ling and Livy Olson.
