A booth sponsored by the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario Halton Hills branch gave children of all ages an opportunity to make a piece of art by trac- ing a local heritage property. Popular subjects included the Speyside Royal Oak, the Georgetown Train Station and the adjacent Station House as well as the Glen Williams Town Hall. In all, over a dozen prop- erties were available with black and white im- ages suitable for tracing and the booth deco- rated with colour photos of the properties. According to Phil Lewin, who came up with the booth's concept, the goal was to edu- cate both children and their parents to some of the more exciting heritage properties in north Halton while, at the same time, provid- ing good fun for part of the afternoon. According to Mayor Rick Bonnette, who encouraged the project from its early stages, "It had legs!" Not only was the booth a grand success on Canada Day, but the mayor displayed some of the art in the Council Chamber in the Hal- ton Hills Civic Centre until Tuesday, Aug. 4. Young artists were invited to pick up their art and be congratulated by the mayor, who met them as they picked up their drawings. "We had originally talked about giving cer- tificates to my favorite pieces, however, the art is so good that every participant received a certificate when they picked up their draw- ing," said Bonnette. "One of our hopes," said Lewin, "is that these will become long-term refrigerator art and continue to educate the families about some of the wonderful heritage properties in our own backyards." Youth explore local heritage in art Mayor Rick Bon- nette presented certificates to young artists from left, Mia Krmpotic, Hannah Calvert and Tyla De Boer, whose dad Martic Kopec picked up her artwork and certificate.
