I was eager to show them the correspondence room, and my letter to Terry. They were certainly impressed, and when my cousin's grandchildren entered their name in the computer, up popped a card to Terry from their grandparents. The whole experience was emotional, educational and awe- inspiring. Terry did sadly lose his battle, but in my esti- mation, he is sure winning the war-- the war on cancer. He showed us all that through his courage, determination and sacrifice, he could be instru- mental in bringing the fight against cancer out of the shadows and to the forefront as well as leading the charge for raising funds for much-needed can- cer research. When Terry was forced to stop his run, with the return of cancer, he passed the torch to those of us who would grasp it. If you have participated or vol- unteered in a Terry Fox Run, if you have given a dol- lar or more for cancer research, if Terry Fox is your hero, your hand is on that torch and you are part of his Marathon of Hope. To date, close to $700 million has been raised, and tremendous gains have been made in cancer research. I know Terry would want to say to us all, "Thank you for 35 years of caring and giving", but it really should be us all saying to him, "Thank you Terry" for showing us the way. Continued from page 16 Councillor Jon Hurst, longtime Terry Fox Run organizer, stands in front of the letter he wrote 35 years ago to Terry Fox, posted at The Terry Fox ex- hibit in the Canadian Museum of History, located in Gatineau, Que. Submitted photo 35th anniversary of Terry Fox Run The organizers of this year's Georgetown Terry Fox Run, to be held on Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Gellert Park, 10241 Eighth Line, a have an- nounced that the event will be attended by three members of Athletics Canada's Track and Field Team: • Fawn Dorr, 400m Hurdles, 2015 World Re- lay team 4 x 400, 2016 Olympic Team 4 x 400 • Jharyl Bowry, Long Jump, 2015 Pan Amer- ican Team • Bismark Boateng, 60m/100m/ 200m Sprints, 2015 CIS 60m Cham- pion, 2015 NACAC Senior Team The athletes will be participat- ing in the run, signing autographs and available for questions from 9:30-11 a.m. This is a great opportu- nity to meet high performance athletes up-close and to be inspired. A selection of Team Canada clothing and other goodies will also be raffled off with the proceeds going to the Terry Fox foundation. Terry Fox accomplished something truly remarkable during his Marathon of Hope. He completed an average of a marathon a day for 143 days and despite the physical toll this must have taken, he found the time, energy and pas- sion to give his complete commitment to fund- raising events held in the evenings. "The name of Terry Fox will forever be asso- ciated with one word-- COURAGE. In a world lacking in real heroes Terry's personal courage made him stand out as someone worthy of such a title. His place as a great Canadian, as a national hero, is assured. "Terry's legacy will stand as an inspiration for generations to come." said Boston Bruins' great Bobby Orr, one of the 35 celebrities supporting Terry Fox Run in its 35th anniversary year. The Terry Fox run raises over $26 million annually and spends over 84 cents of every dollar directly on its mission to fund innovative cancer research. The Acting Mayor will open the George- town proceedings at 8:20 a.m. with the first runners getting under way at 8:30 a.m. and participants starting anytime until noon. Entry to the run is free but donations are appreciated.
