That's like walking from Georgetown District High school to Acton District High School (13 km) and back again. She figures she will do it in five hours. She will be among hundreds of people participating in The Shop- pers Drug Mart® OneWalk to Con- quer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Previously, this fundraiser was held over two days, with partici- pants walking 32 km on Saturday and 28 km on Sunday. It was known as the Weekend to End Women's Cancers. Dort, who did the two-day walk for the past three years, has mixed feelings about the change. She feels one day of walking is too easy. "We will go away with a few blisters but that is nothing com- pared to what people with cancer go through," Dort, 41, says. Her individual goal is to raise $1,500. But her team, the Sole Sisters, has already raised almost $8,000. "One person can make a dif- ference. I say to people who want to donate; it doesn't matter if you want to give 10 cents or $10, every bit helps," Dort says. She decided to get involved in raising funds for cancer research after her friend told her about the experience. "You see little kids along the route waiting for their mom, and they thank you for walking. It's so emotional," she says. "This year was going to be my last year and then Addison hap- pened. For every ounce of faith I've had in my life, this has made me question it," Dort says. Cancer claimed 7-year-old Ad- dison Jenner Rolke's life on June 16. She was a school mate of Dort's 11-year-old twin boys at Silver Creek Public School in George- town South. This year, Dort is walking for the Jenner Rolke family and for her mother-in-law who has lung can- cer. She will also be thinking about many friends and relatives that have had cancer. "The strength each of these people has shown in the wake of a cancer diagnosis is simply awe- inspiring, and with every step, I'll hope and pray one day there is a cure," she says. Every day, over 500 Canadi- ans are diagnosed with cancer and more than 200 Canadians die from the disease. The critical funding raised through OneWalk supports the mission at The Prin- cess Margaret: to conquer cancer in our lifetime, says Paul Alofs, the President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation in a press release.
