Submitted photo Raiders rattle Blades in season opener Hometown boy Daniel Hardie had a five-point night in his debut for the Georgetown Raiders Saturday in their 8-2 trouncing of the visiting Oakville Blades to open the regular season with an exclamation point. The 17-year-old Hardie, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound graduate of the Halton Hurricanes' midgets, scored twice and added two assists in the onslaught, as the Raiders took a 4-0 lead in the first period and cruised from there. Also scoring for the home side were returnee Zack Dybowski, Matthew Cairns, Josh Dickinson, Brendan Jacome, Jack Jacome and Michael Boushy, who add- ed three assists. Both teams were missing players who are trying to land jobs with Ontario Hockey League clubs but the Raiders were relentless from the opening shift, press- ing the Blades into making numerous turnovers. Programs or cellphones were mandatory for the 357 in attendance at the Alcott Arena to keep track of all the new names on the Raider roster as just six play- ers from the 2014-15 squad suited up Saturday. With last year's superb rookie netminder Jack La- Fontaine having chosen to play in the North Ameri- can Hockey League with the Janesville Jets, George- town head coach & GM Greg Walters acquired 20-year-old goaltender Andrew Masters from the Trenton Golden Hawks last week and the Kitchener resident made 25 saves for the win Saturday. This week, the Raiders host the team that eliminat- ed them from last year's playoffs, the Toronto Jr. Ca- nadiens, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., followed by a visit to Oakville Friday and a home date with the Toronto Patriots Saturday at 7:30 p.m. NOTES: Former Raider Connor Brown has been named captain of the OHL's Saginaw Spirit for his overage season…Local native Ben Morris has re- turned to the Burlington Cougars after suffering a ter- rifying throat injury during a game last year and the 18-year-old forward had a pre-season hat trick before attending the training camp of the OHL's Peterbor- ough Petes. Georgetown Raiders' rookie forward Jack Jacome slipped a backhander past Oakville goalie Brendan McGlynn Saturday during the first period of their Ontario Junior Hockey League contest. "Those were probably the most intense lacrosse games I've ever played in," said the former Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldog leading scorer, who was one of just three non-na- tives on the Rivermen, picked up from the Oakville Titans midway through the season. "It was a lot of fun playing with three or four guys who will probably end up in the Hall of Fame (Roger Vyse, Cory Bomberry and goalie Angus Goodleaf)." Bland said he plans to return to play for Six Nations next summer. Local man claims Sr. B title Continued from page 42 Team of the Week: Rookie Eagles A 17-6 victory over the host Oakville A's clinched the Central Ontario Baseball Association AA Rookie Ball title for the Halton Hills Eagles late last month. The Eagles started off the COBA tourney with wins over the Bramp- ton Royals and Mississauga South- west Twins in the double-elimina- tion format before taking their only loss against Oakville. The Halton Hills rookies quali- fied for the 12-team OBA AA cham- pionships this past weekend in Brantford. After winning their first two games of the draw on Friday, the Eagles lost their next game in the bottom of the seventh and were eliminated after another defeat lat- er in the day to end the season. Nick Hancock picked up the win on the mound as the Halton Hills Eagles defeated the Burlington Bulls 7-1 in the championship game at the six-team Central On- tario Baseball Association midget 'A' double-knockout tournament. Thanks to that victory, the midg- et Eagles earned a spot in the OBA A championship tourney in Strat- ford, where they finished fourth. The Halton Hills squad finished the season with a record of 17-5-1, winning the Mississauga AA tour- ney and finishing as runners-up at another event in Chatham in July. COBA title for midget Eagles
