Halton police will hold its sec- ond regional Firearms and Weap- ons Amnesty from Oct. 19-29. The amnesty is an opportunity for members of the community to hand in their firearms and/or weapons and ammunition that are unused, inherited or illegal, without the fear of being charged. Halton police said are hold- ing the amnesty to create a safer community and to prevent dan- gerous weapons from falling into the hands of criminals. Currently in Ontario there are more than 500,000 citizens who hold valid Possession Licenses (POL) and Possession and Acqui- sition Licenses (PAL). There are more than 300,000 restricted and prohibited fire- arms registered in Ontario, not including non-restricted firearms (long guns). Police said in some circum- stances, POL and PAL licensees no longer wish to keep their fire- arms due to age, ability and resi- dential location. In other cases the licensee for- gets to renew their license or dies, leaving the firearms unregistered or in the possession of unlicensed family members. To arrange a weapons pickup residents can call 905-465-8733 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the amnesty. Residents must not bring any weapons or firearms to a police station, transport firearms or weapons in a vehicle or greet of- ficers at the door with firearms or weapons. Officers assigned to pick up the weapons will provide police identification and will require a signature for destruction. A Georgetown man is facing alcohol and drug-related charges after a Halton Re- gional Police officer on patrol became con- cerned about a driver's abilities Saturday evening. After pulling over the vehicle at around 8 p.m. in the area of Maple Ave. and Mounta- inview Rd. N., the officer developed grounds to believe the driver had consumed alcohol. Charged with having more than 80 mg of al- cohol in 100 ml of blood and possession of marijuana is Ronald Corbett, 52. Local man chargedHalton police holding Firearms and Weapons Amnesty Oct. 19-29
