Members volunteer with gar- dening and other contributions to help main- tain the community-owned heritage building. Women's Institute (W.I.) President Annemarie McDonald, said, "Devereaux House is a natural fit with our organization and our members feel right at home in this historical setting." Founded in 1897, the original purpose of the Women's Institute was to improve wom- en's skills in homemaking and child care but now has expanded to include personal growth and community action. W.I. mem- bers actively work together for family, home, community, and country. Documenting the history of local communities in 'Tweedsmuir Books' has been an important focus since the 1940s. The 290 W.I. branches throughout On- tario and many more across Canada are open to all women. Devereaux House Manager Ann Lawlor said, "It's wonderful to have Women's Insti- tute members as partners in house opera- tions. The Friends of Devereaux House are particularly pleased because they are such great cooks!" Patrons of the popular Devereaux House Mother's Day Tea were treated this year to Institute members' savoury sandwiches and sweets. Devereaux House is a designated heritage farmhouse, owned by the Town of Halton Hills and operated by the non-profit Friends of Devereaux House. The main floor of the building is decorated in early 20th century style and is available to the public on a rental basis for social events and meetings.
