Submitted photo Gold rush for Blue Fin The Halton Hills Blue Fins domi- nated the field by winning 12 out of the 16 relay events at a Swim On- tario-sanctioned meet in Oshawa earlier this month. Top of the field was 12-year- old female Megan Hamilton, who swept the freestyle events by win- ning the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m distances. Her relay team, comprised of Ally Bennett, Kate Jickling and Aly- son Leonard, was also undefeated that weekend. On the boys' side, 10-year-old Dominic Vulpoi led the charge by winning the 50m and 100m breast- stroke races and the 100m free. Other big swims came from Ethan Taylor, Isabella Santana, Mi- kayla Roy, Alyson Leonard, Daniel Acton, Ally Bennett, Marcus Her- vatin, Matt Jackson, Kate Jickling, Reyden Knighton, Alex Murgoci, Gloria Pejic and David Vulpoi. Team of the Week: Peewee Crimson Tide After losing in last year's champi- onship game, North Halton's pee- wee minor development Crimson Tide left no doubt about where the superiority lies in the 2015 season after thrashing the Toronto Jets 30-6 in Sunday's Ontario Football League final at Kiwanis Field in Georgetown. Tide running backs Lucas Al- lan and Dante Bowen each scored two touchdowns while QB Dylan Cudmore added another major. Owen Franco was named defen- sive MVP. The OFL held its Champion- ship Day in Halton Hills for the first time Sunday as eight division winners were decided. As the lone Crimson Tide to advance to the finals, the peewee Tide completed a perfect season that began with a tight 21-14 vic- tory over the Jets. North Halton's peewees out- scored the opposition 341-15 in the regular season. The team rolled through the regular season with an 8-0 record and then went 3-0 in the playoffs. McNiven shines in OHL's win Although he didn't officially get the win in goal, Georgetown's Michael McNiven helped backstop Team OHL to a 2-1 victory over Team Russia Monday night in Windsor. The 18-year-old McNiven made 11 saves and only surrendered a first-period power-play marker during his 29 minutes between the pipes and OHL clinched the Canada Russia Series title by win- ning the first four meetings in the six-game matchup. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Mc- Niven, in his second season with the OHL's Owen Sound Attack, shared the netminding duties with Dylan Wells of Peterborough. Kelly's executive director's desk at the GAO head office in Uxbridge is right around the cor- ner from someone else with strong ties to Georgetown, Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Mary Ann Hayward. The longtime Club at North Halton member announced last week she's retir- ing at the end of January as the GAO's man- ager of sport performance since being hired in that role with the organization in 2009 and will now shift her focus to playing more competitive golf. Hired by Kelly for the position, Hayward said she most enjoyed her time with the Team Ontario and Regional Team programs for the GAO. "The athletes, families and coaches that have been a part of these programs have been phenomenal," the Aurora resi- dent said in a release. "I have learnt even more about golf and performance from them over the past six years." MEGAN HAMILTON Raiders edged by Patriots Using several affiliated players, the Georgetown Raiders came out on the short end of a 5-4 decision to the host Toronto Patriots Tuesday night in an Ontario Junior Hockey League contest. The 14-8-2 Raiders, who've now won just five of their last dozen games, had five of their best play- ers out of the lineup against the Pa- triots due to their commitments to the Eastern Canada All-Star Chal- lenge in Cornwall, Ont. AP Riley Damiani, Jordan Crocker, Michael Boushy and Brendan Jacome scored for the Raiders, who played host to the Mississauga Chargers Wednesday. The St. Michael's Buzzers travel to Georgetown Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. start and the Raiders visit the North York Rangers Sunday.
