Gary Carr, Regional Chair Be prepared in case of a winter weather emergency Are you prepared in case of an emergency? Sudden or severe winter storms can happen at any time. Your best defence is to be prepared. Heavy snow can cause delays and accidents due to slippery roads and stranded vehicles. Winter storms can down power lines, make travel difficult and cause power outages, leaving you without essential services. While Halton Region and our partners are committed to keeping residents safe, emergency preparedness is a shared responsibility and individuals have an important role to play. Learn more about how you can prepare for winter weather. Step 1. Know the Risks Step 2. Make a Plan Step 3. Get a Kit Visit halton.ca/beprepared for valuable resources and practical tips, including complete lists of what to put in your kits, what to do prior to and during a winter storm, and how to recognize or treat cold-related injuries. You can also sign up for cold alerts on halton.ca/cold. Being prepared for emergencies means we are ready to protect not only ourselves, our families and our property, but also our community. This is one of the reasons why Halton is a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire. Essential services available during holidays On behalf of Regional Council, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Over the holidays, all essential services will remain available, including water and wastewater services, waste collection, road operations, public health, paramedic services and social and community services. Some public facilities will be closed during the holidays, including Halton Region's administrative offices from 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 23 until 8:30 a.m. on Monday, January 4. Active transportation - keeping Haltonmoving One of the reasons Halton is such a great place to live is our commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure, including a comprehensive transportation system. On November 12, Regional Council endorsed, in principle, the Halton Region Active TransportationMaster Plan (ATMP), which will provide Halton with the required strategy and infrastructure initiatives to promote non- motorized travel throughout the region to the year 2031. Through the ATMP, Halton Region will work together with our Local Municipal partners to help build a safe, affordable, sustainable and efficient transportation network that encourages walking and cycling. The ATMP is designed to support policies and growth set out in the Halton TransportationMaster Plan (TMP)-- the Road to Change, aimed at delivering a balanced and multi-modal transportation system serving all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians. The proposed plan would implement over 800 kilometres of new on-road and off-road active transportation infrastructure, including bike lanes, sidewalks and multi-use trails.
