The 23-10-1-2 Raiders began the 2018 segment of the schedule with a fresh outlook and a home date against Buffalo Saturday night, but the Jr. Sabres earned their third win in as many meetings with Georgetown this season in a 2-1 decision. As it was during an unheard-of six-game losing streak in Decem- ber, converting chances was again the sore spot for a veteran- laden Raider side, which outshot the 21-14-0-2 Jr. Sabres 47-20. With 18 starts left in the regu- lar season, the Raiders are in top spot in the OJHL's West Division but reside in fifth place in the South/West Conference, al- though they do hold games in hand against South Division foes Toronto Patriots, Oakville Blades, North York Rangers and Toronto Jr. Canadiens. Justin Paul had the lone tally against Buffalo. On Sunday in Milton versus the 2-35-0-2 IceHawks, Matt McJannet (2), Brendan D'Agosti- no (2), Jason Smith, Jordan Crocker and Paul found the back of the net for the visitors in a 7-0 trouncing. Netminder Nathan Torchia picked up his first win of the cam- paign, making 23 stops. Following a visit by the vastly improved Mississauga Chargers Wednesday evening, the Raiders head into a stretch of four games in five days at home to the Jr. Ca- nadiens Saturday at the Alcott Arena at 7:30 p.m. before after- noon road tilts in Orangeville Sunday and Buffalo Monday. Wednesday (Jan. 10) also serves as the OJHL's roster cut- down deadline and the Raiders began making moves by signing 19-year-old defender Mitch Luzar over the weekend. The Bolton res- ident spent the past two seasons with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens. Raiders ground IceHawks but edged by Jr. Sabres again A 6-2 loss to the U.S. Tuesday meant that Cana- da finished the round-robin portion of the 2018 IIHF U-18 Women's World Champion- ship in Dmitrov, Russia with a 1-2 record and play in a quarter-final game Wednesday. Sarah Fillier of George- town, a 17-year-old forward, was named captain of the squad on the eve of the tour- nament and is playing in her second U-18 world championship. "It's amazing to be able to wear the 'C' on this amazing jersey at the world champi- onship. It's an honour. Our team is full of leaders and we have a great leadership group behind us." Fillier, who plays for the Provincial Women's Hock- ey League's Oakville Hor- nets, opened the scoring for Canada on a power-play marker early in the third pe- riod in Saturday's tourney opener against the home side but the Russians hung on for a 3-2 victory - their first win over Canada in 10 all-time meetings - despite being outshot 36-14. The Christ the King sec- ondary school student was held off the scoresheet in a 4-0 win over Sweden Sun- day and had an assist in the loss to the U.S. The championship game is set for Saturday.
