Carillion Canada Inc.'s parent company, Carrillion PLC, which is the second- largest construction firm in the U.K., announced it was facing bankruptcy ear- lier this week. In Ontario, Carillion holds privatized contracts for the Brampton Civic Hospital, Sault Area Hospi- tal, Oakville Trafalgar Me- morial, Etobicoke General, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre covering ser- vices such as maintenance, security, housekeeping, call centres, patient food, hospital laundry and gen- eral management. It also holds road main- tenance contracts for about 40,000 km of highways across Alberta and Onta- rio, including snow clear- ing and road maintenance responsibilities for High- way 10 south of Highway 9 from Orangeville to Cale- don. "Over the past few days, the Ministry of Transporta- tion has been holding pro- ductive conversations with Carillion Canada about the continuation of winter maintenance services in their 8 (sic) contract areas," said newly minted trans- portation minister Kath- ryn McGarry in a release Friday (Jan 19). "Today, I can report that an arrangement is in place that will allow these servic- es to continue uninterrupt- ed for the remainder of this winter. This arrangement protects over 1,100 jobs in Ontario while also ensur- ing value-for-money," she added. The relationship be- tween Carillion Canada and the province was al- ready a bit of a mess before news of the bankruptcy. In November 2017, the Brampton Guardian re- ported the province was ending its contract in a mu- tual agreement with the company after several re- ported incidents. Carillion was fined hun- dreds of thousands of dol- lars in 2014, for failing to clear highways during snow storms. The company again ran into trouble after it was found it had over- salted during a New Year's storm in 2016, while poorly maintaining some roads. The province already had plans to issue four re- quests for proposals from other companies to assume Carillion's responsibilities in the Peel, Halton, York and Toronto areas ahead of the 2019-2020 winter season. In November, the prov- ince said any new contracts would include enhanced winter equipment require- ments, increased road pa- trols, and provisions to en- sure the proper mainte- nance and readiness of equipment.
