Chong, alongside leader of the official Opposition Andrew Scheer, tabled the Supporting New Parents Act in Parliament earlier this month. It's a tax benefit that would offer a break on fed- eral income tax rates that parents pay while on mater- nity or paternity leave. "Canada's Conservatives understand the importance of supporting young fami- lies with children during those important early years," said Chong in a state- ment. A parent that earns around $50,000 a year would be eligible for savings of up to $4,000 in income tax when going on parental leave. "For any young family, this tax relief will make a big difference and help with the costs of raising a newborn," Chong said.
