Diane Rabenda Chair of the Board Roxana Negoi Treasurer of the Board Paula Dawson Director of Education "A director's calling me?" This was the exhilarating thought run- ning through Tom Herstad's mind as he an- swered a phone call to find that two-time Emmy Award-winning director Paul Saltz- man wanted to discuss his book, Love, Care and Share. Herstad's biographical work chronicles the life of his late mother Mary Margaret (Margie) Herstad, seen through his eyes, his family's experiences and the perspectives of friends who knew her. It is centred on three principles that Her- stad says his mother lived by her entire life: love, care and share, which Herstad defines in the book. "The world has to be a kinder place. There's darkness. There's corruption. There's this ego that's feeding on itself. We've got to take better care of each other. We've got to be present with one another," he said. "It's all laid out in the book." It was through a series of seemingly coin- cidental encounters that Herstad was first able to meet the woman who would help publish his book and then the individuals who would give him his first movie deal. But Herstad says he doesn't necessarily believe in coincidences. By his mother's defi- nition, these encounters were "Godinci- dences" - a word she used to describe the things that couldn't be explained - such as how the first step in Herstad landing his movie deal was by being mistaken for some- one else. While reading a proof of Love, Care and Share in his trailer by the lake in Oakville one day, Herstad said he heard a knock at the door. When he opened it, a man was stand- ing there whom he had never met. He soon found out that the man had mistaken his trailer for someone else's. Herstad said the two of them got to talking and this then- stranger soon became his connection to Saltzman, who resides in Oakville. For Saltzman, the opportunity to direct a film that has the power to transform lives is what drew him to the project. "I thought it was a remarkable story about an amazing woman. I thought it was yet again, the kind of amazing story where love really does change people and does change the world," he said. "I thought it was a heroic story - meaning a story of heroism, not just of Margie, but of the whole family." Saltzman, who has directed hundreds of films and documentaries, says though each one of his films are unique, he aims to back projects that have the ability to deeply move an audience. "Film and books and television, all of those things are tools - yes for entertain- ment - but also for making life better," he added. "This is the kind of story that can im- prove lives if it's done well." In November 2017, Love, Care and Share was converted into a screenplay by Her- stad's sister Julieanne. The script is now in refinement and slated to be finalized by May 2018. The project is then expected to move in- to its next stages, with Herstad and Ju- lieanne as its executive producers. Herstad says in terms of plot structure, audiences can expect the movie to be nearly identical to the book, and like the book, he hopes the future film's message will reso- nate with viewers everywhere. "After finishing the movie or reading the book, whoever comes to mind in your life, go and spend more time with them," he said. Herstad will be holding a book signing at Indigospirit in the Georgetown Market Place on April 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. NEWS Tom Herstad outside his home in Norval, Ont.
