Globe Productions' latest stage project may feature classic tunes from well-loved musicals span- ning decades, but the show itself is anything but traditional. The cast and crew are shaking things up, as they prepare for He Sang, She Sang - a high-energy cabaret that aims to provide its au- dience with a new take on some of their favourite characters from past and present. Here's what you need to know: There's something in it for ev- eryone He Sang, She Sang is a cabaret show featuring 24 songs from mu- sicals spanning over more than six decades. Regardless of your musi- cal tastes, or the breadth of your knowledge in musical theatre, the Globe presents variety of genres and characters from a number of classics including Les Misérables, 13, Beauty and the Beast, Guys and Dolls and much more. The cast is bending gender ste- reotypes every which-way Make no mistake, this isn't your average cabaret. With He Sang, She Sang, Globe Productions is twisting gender stereotype expec- tations, by having songs that are traditionally sung by men sung by women and vice versa. The aim, the Globe cast says, is for audience members to see characters they have come to know and love in a different light. "We're taking some of your all- time favourite theatre tunes and we're putting a spin on it where it's sung by the opposite gender," said cast member Jenna Brown. "It re- ally gives you the opportunity to play roles you would never get to play outside of a cabaret like this." The cast is a mixed bag of both seasoned and new performers While some cast members have been performing with Globe Pro- ductions for more than a decade, others are making their stage de- buts this week. Rock musician An- drew Skuza and singing instructor Emily Zathey are joining Globe Productions for the first time in He Sang, She Sang. There's some humour to the show, but don't let that fool you Sure some of the cast members prance around the stage in dresses and fairy wings, but there is a deep- er meaning to take away from the show, cast member Jordan May said. "It's not just a cool opportunity for us performing stuff that we don't normally get to do," May add- ed. "It puts an entirely new context on a lot of these songs, and sure, I mean there's a certain absurdism to some of the changes they've done, but that doesn't mean that there aren't very serious and poi- gnant meanings to be found in some of these pieces depending on who's performing them."
