Meet the potential leaders looking to bring the voice of Wellington-Halton Hills to Queen's Park. Jon Hurst Jon Hurst is the Liberal party candidate who was nominated on April 30 and is a longtime Acton resident, with over 15 years of experience as a councillor for the town of Halton Hills. Hurst began his career as a young entrepreneur in Acton, running his own industrial electrical company. He serviced local businesses like Disston Saw, the town of Acton and the board of education, before becoming a maintenance manager at Frank Heller and Associates. He retired from his post as maintenance manager, and has become active in both Georgetown and Acton through various community initiatives like the Terry Fox Run. He also sits on the accessibility advisory com- mittee and hosts Voice Print on YourTV, where he reads weekly news articles for the visually impaired in Hal- ton Hills. He has sat on the board of directors for Halton Healthcare for a number of years, and says he's interest- ed in leading the party in opposition to the Conserva- tives. Ted Arnott Arnott has been representing Wellington for over 28 years, winning his first seat in legislature in 1990 at the age of 27. Arnott went on to be elected to represent the Water- loo-Wellington riding from 1999-2007, and subsequently Wellington-Halton Hills, a title he currently holds. The Conservative member of provincial Parliament announced he is running for re-election in February. Arnott grew up in Arthur and at the age of 16 re- ceived an Order of St. John of Jerusalem for helping save a drowning man in Rockwood. His family worked in heavy construction engineering and Arnott went on to pursue a degree in political science from Wilfrid Lau- rier University. He now resides in Fergus with his wife and three children, who are each pursuing post-second- ary educations. Dave Rodgers Rodgers is the Green party candidate for Welling- ton-Halton Hills and brings decades of environmental biology experience to the party and riding. Rodgers worked for Ontario Hydro in their environ- mental research department for over 20 years. The Aberfoyle resident completed his undergrad in Calga- ry, where he grew up, studying zoology and then mov- ing on to graduate studies at the University of Ottawa. Rodgers has completed work for the National Re- search Council and completed his PhD at the Universi- ty of Guelph, studying the ways in which rainbow trout absorb mercury. He is an avid fisherman, and passion- ate about aquatic life and local waterways. He has been a dedicated member of the Friends of Mill Creek. Rodgers' wife is an environmental consultant, they have two sons, a daughter and two beloved mixed breed dogs. The NDP party has yet to choose a candidate as the nomination meeting will be held on Monday, May 7 at the Desert Rose café in Elora.
