May 17 became International Day Against Homophobia, Tran- sphobia and Biphobia in 2005 to commemorate the day in 1990 when the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization made the decision to no longer identify homosexuality as a men- tal illness. "When we celebrate days like this, we are supporting every sin- gle student, that they can have a learning environment that en- hances and is conducive to their growth as human beings and their academic success," said Di- rector of Education Stuart Miller in a HDSB video posted to Twit- ter. The day is celebrated world- wide in more than 120 countries.
