At a recent conference for the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, regional Coun. Sean O'Meara represented Hal- ton and took part in three days' worth of talks with politicians from across the shores of the great lakes, both in Canada and the US. "I am pleased to have partici- pated in some important discus- sions and decisions on moving forward on issues that are im- portant to the Halton communi- ty, such as addressing nutrient pollution reduction, long-term water infrastructure funding and implementation support, and flood mitigation initiatives," said O'Meara. The conference focuses on de- veloping initiatives aimed at protecting and restoring the freshwater of the great lakes, as well as water quality along the St. Lawrence seaway. Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie and Township of Hu- ron-Kinloss Mayor Mitch Two- lan are heading up a new May- or's Council on Nature and Cit- ies, which aims to create and identify green spaces in urban areas and better connect them in order to protect migration path- ways. Carr says that Halton's mes- sage at the conference was to re- iterate the importance of work- ing together around each of the lakes to protect them. He says that with Halton's state-of-the-art wastewater treatment centres the region can be a role model for other munici- palities on the waterfront. "We would like them to come up to our standards as well," said Carr. "We're very proud of the fact that we've put in place the most advanced wastewater treatment plant in the world." Carr says the region has played a key role in supporting the restoration of the Randal Reef in Hamilton Harbor, as well as the Halton Skyway Wastewa- ter plant. "This is the most environ- mentally-friendly wastewater plant anywhere in the world to- day," said Carr. "The upgrades were $150 million." They are also upgrading the outflow pipes in Oakville at Cor- onation Park. "We're sort of leaders," said Carr. "It's one lake that we all share, so we work together ... to ensure we have all these beauti- ful natural resources for genera- tions to come."
