Georgetown Little Theatre is trying something new - and with this script, it's all hands on deck. The theatre's latest initiative, the Original Works Showcase, is an opportunity for each of the actors to also put on their playwriting hats and get scribbling. The original script chosen for the showcase, titled Within a Play, was written by director David Busuttil who wasn't quite finished with his brainchild just yet. He wanted to get more voices involved and he wanted to watch his work grow and transform. To do this, his script was workshopped for four months by the entire cast, each of whom became an expert on the inner workings of their respective char- acters. The show itself is a metatheatrical experience born out of inspiration drawn partly from plays like Waiting for Godot and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and partly from half-serious chats he's had with his wife about the meaning of life. The play is centred on a group of actors who are putting on a show and are just moments away from curtain time when they find a copy of the script for Within a Play, bringing to light the question of wheth- er or not they are actually characters in a play them- selves. "I jokingly say it's Inception," he laughed, refer- ring to the 2010 sci-fi action film. "But in a play." Busuttil says the larger question this play begs is whether or not audience members believe in an ulti- mate life plan. And Busuttil plans to pick the brains of his audience members - with a splash of humour. "I believe an audience can handle very difficult material as long as they are also laughing, so I hope they engage in these deep themes about the very na- ture of life and I also hope they enjoy that experience," he said.
