3| The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,June 21,2018 theifp.ca Georgetown resident Al- ice Wilson knows exactly what to expect from her driver's licence renewal test, but that doesn't stop her from getting anxious every time. The 84-year-old renewed her licence in March, and though she finds the writ- ten test to be simple, she says there are always doubts in the back of her mind, especially when it comes to the vision-screen- ing portion. "I get uptight about things like that," she said. "I don't like taking tests." Wilson says it's the thought of letting people down who rely on her that worries her most about the possibility of losing her li- cence. She says she is re- sponsible for driving her friends who are no longer able to. "It makes a big differ- ence, because if you don't have a licence then you can't function properly," she said. Wilson is also responsi- ble for supplying ingredi- ents to make sandwiches at Georgetown's Hillsview Ac- tive Living Centre on Tues- days - a responsibility she thoroughly enjoys, which requires the use of her vehi- cle. "We go shopping to buy the groceries and all that for the sandwiches and if I didn't drive to go pick the stuff up we wouldn't have them," she said. "Somebody else would have to go do it." Ontario's Ministry of Transportation requires drivers over the age of 80 to go through the licence re- newal process every two years, which includes a vi- sion test, a driver record re- view, a group education ses- sion and two cognitive screening tests. Wilson passed her as- sessments for 2018, which means she has two years be- fore she has to worry about her next one - unless she happens to be involved in an at-fault collision. In Ontario, if a driver over 70 years of age is in- volved in an at-fault acci- dent, they will be required to take a road test within 60 days of receiving a notice. This is a standard proce- dure, but one that Keith Black, owner of Wheels Driver Training in Milton, says not enough people over 70 are made aware of and prepared for. "There's nothing wrong with a road test. What's wrong is they are unaware of what's on it and what they have to do correctly," Black said. "The government has administered a situation, which puts them in jeopar- dy of their driving because they haven't done a road test for many, many years COMMUNITY Are Halton seniors well equipped for driving after age 70?
