Jasmine Sweatman B.A., J.D., LL.M., TEP., C.S., EPC, CPCA Certified Specialist in Estates & Trusts Wills, Powers of Attorney, Trusts, Estate Litigation and Administration, Corporate, Real Estate Q: A : During the course of estate administration sometimes small things can be missed, including bank accounts or other "unclaimed balances". An "unclaimed balance" includes deposit account, bank drafts, certified cheques, deposit receipts, money orders, GICs, term deposits, credit card balances, or traveller's cheques. If there is no activity in relation to an unclaimed balance for a period of 10 years and the owner cannot be contacted the financial institution can transfer the unclaimed balance to the Bank of Canada at the end of the calendar year. The Bank of Canada will hold balances under $1,000.00 for an additional 30 years and balances over $1,000.00 for an additional 100 years. Once the holding period expires and the balance remains unclaimed it is transferred to the Receiver General as revenue. According to the Bank of Canada at the end of December 2013 they held 1.4 million unclaimed balances worth $532 million. The oldest balance dates back to 1900! Search unclaimed bank balances on The Bank of Canada website. Found unclaimed funds, contact us to assist you in claiming your forgotten accounts. * www.sweatmanlaw.com *Sweatman Law Professional Corporation WEEK THEME 1. JULY 3-6 Anything Goes! 2.
