5| The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,July 12,2018 theifp.ca Ryan McLaughlin moved to Acton over three years ago, looking for a town to raise his young family. Since then, he's not just made it his home, he's made it his community. "It's the jewel nobody knows about," said McLaughlin, talking about other communities becoming larger GTA cit- ies. "Acton and George- town are nice little com- munities." Communities, he says, have been perfect for rais- ing his son and daughter, for taking to indoor soccer in the mornings, library reading sessions and swimming lessons. McLaughlin has put in his bid to run for council- lor of Ward 1, Acton, in the upcoming Halton Hills municipal election. "I wanted to run be- cause I do have a sense of community," he said, add- ing that he has a good sense of what parents' needs are in the area. "I think I could be a re- presentation of that com- munity." Raised in Burlington, McLaughlin is a banker who commutes to Missis- sauga for work. He says his occupation gives him a good sense of fiscal re- sponsibility. McLaugh- lin is also the president of the George- town Rotary Club. "You've got to get out and get in- volved in the community," he said. "That's how you build a community." He says he would like to tackle some of the tough issues facing Acton, like the state of the downtown core, truck traffic and re- sultant pedestrian safety. "That corner is terri- ble," he said. "The traffic is very industrialized at cer- tain parts of the day." He says that the town is also in need of services, such as special needs pro- grams. "There's all of those storefronts that are avail- able," he said. "There's a demand for it." Although he under- stands the risk of making capital investments in rec- reation services, McLaughlin recognizes a need for im- provements to the local pool, and for more leisure services for young fami- lies. "It's just time for something different," said McLaughlin, who so far would be in the running with Coun. Mike Albano. Longtime Ward 1 Coun. Jon Hurst has yet to file for candidacy. "I would like to work with Mike," said McLaughlin. "The two of us could be a good team." In his spare time, McLaughlin plays water polo on a team in Burling- ton and enjoys visiting lo- cal attractions like Chu- dleigh's Farm with his children and hiking in Limehouse.
