The Town has stated several in- tents for its public art master plan, including beautifying the area, creating a sense of place, promot- ing discussion and interaction, fostering town pride and educat- ing the public. "Public art is important for a number of reasons. It creates great spaces, iconic spaces, it helps cre- ate a sense of place and identity," McLeod said. "It gives the community areas to gather around and things to dis- cuss. It contributes to the creative economy, it attracts investment, it brings in tourism, so there's a lot of goals and objectives met through public art programs." The public art master plan is al- so all about improving quality of life and stimulating innovation, said Damian Szybalski, manager of economic development, innova- tion and culture. How will the art be acquired? Art will be acquired through town-initiated commissioning, private developer commissions, community-based initiatives and donations. Artists involved will require a certain level of experience and will be expected to work with the com- munity and engineers when creat- ing the pieces that are desired by the town. Those selected will be a mix- ture of local and international art- ists, with priority being given to opportunities for local artists. Aside from being selected to aid in the creation of a project, there will be a host of other options for local artists who wish to get in- volved, including mentorship pro- grams, McLeod said.
