27| The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,July 19,2018 theifp.ca Karl Stensson was born into his family business, Sheridan Nurseries. He says he would watch his father, his uncles and his aunt while growing up, feel- ing inspired to carry on the family legacy. As a child, Stensson says he remembers his dad working nights, often having to go back to the office after dinnertime. Natu- rally, the young Stensson would tag along. "They all wanted to make the business successful. They worked hard at it. They worked nights," Stensson said. "I used to go with my dad and run around the barn and see what was going on." Now, after a five-decade career, Stens- son has announced he will be stepping down from his role of CEO and president at Sheridan Nurseries and transitioning into a part-time position with the company. Stensson first began working for Sheri- dan Garden Centres during high school, then continued on through university while also pursuing a Bachelor of Land- scape Architecture from the University of Guelph. From there, Stensson took on two posi- tions in park planning, both for the City of Toronto and City of North York, before re- turning to Sheridan Nurseries In 1976, working in several roles before becoming CEO and president in 2015. In addition to his career at Sheridan Nurseries, Stensson served on several in- dustry boards and committees, including the Landscape Ontario Board from 1978 to 1985, of which he became president in 1979. In 1998, Stensson won the Honorary Life Member of Landscape Ontario Award, what he says is one of his most memorable achievements across the span of his career. "I put a lot of time and effort into the as- sociation because I believed the whole in- dustry could benefit from working togeth- er," he said. "So that was sort of a crowning accomplishment." Stensson's other notable achievements include being named Canadian Grower of the Year for two consecutive years in 2012 and 2013, as well as receiving the Universi- ty of Guelph Alumnus of Honour title for 2015 for his contributions to both business and charity. "It's not so much about getting the plaque and, of course, you're not thinking about it when you're doing it, but when you do get it, you realize that you have made a difference," he said. "I think it's important for everybody to try and make a differ- ence." In his new role as Vice Executive Chair- man and Director of Brand Integrity, Stensson will work a few days a week, fo- cusing on educating employees about the brand and making sure it remains top of mind. As for his personal time, Stensson says he plans to travel and spend time with his grandchildren, but he also hopes to be able to join other corporate boards and find companies that require his expertise in business and retail. "As I say, I was born into the business really, so I'm looking forward to new op- portunities," he added. Sheridan Nurseries will be announcing Stensson's successor in August.
