Seats across all four wards are hotly contested this year, with candidates from all walks of life preparing to represent the residents of Halton Hills. Current Mayor Rick Bon- nette, who has led the town since 2003 is running for anoth- er term in council. Elected onto town council at the age of 27, Bonnette has spent the major- ity of his life serving the town. He is running against two new faces, Jim Waldbusser and Robert Gottardi. Waldbusser moved to Cana- da after growing up in Ameri- ca's south, moving to George- town while working for a com- pany dealing with computer sciences. He's an advocate for regional transit and historical preservation. Gottardi is a father and fi- nancial expert who started his career working for a credit union. He moved to George- town to raise his daughter, who lives with cystic fibrosis. As for regional councillors, Ward 1 and 2 representative Clark Somerville is uncontest- ed in his position. The former leader of the Federation of Ca- nadian Municipalities has ex- perience travelling across the globe in that position. Incumbent for Ward 3 and 4 regional councillor Jane Fogal has some competition. The longtime Halton Hills council- lor and environmental advo- cate is running against new candidates like John Cooke and Mark Lockwood. Lockwood hails from Prince Edward County, the semi-re- tired father drives a school bus in his spare time after leaving his managerial post at an in- surance firm. Cooke ran for regional council in 2014 and is once again a contender for the Ward 3 and 4 seat. He is an advocate for bringing high paying jobs to Halton and fostering the growth of a highly skilled work- force.
