Until Oct. 7, the IndigoS- pirit store in the George- town Marketplace is fund- raising on St. Catherine of Alexandria Elementary School's behalf. Now in its 10th year, Adopt a School connects Indigo employees, high- needs elementary schools and their communities to fundraise locally and raise awareness about the lack of funding for Canadian el- ementary school libraries. All participating schools receive every dol- lar raised for their school and are eligible for a dona- tion match of up to $1,200 per school from the founda- tion. Currently, four schools in Georgetown have part- nered with Indigo to raise money for new library books. While using adoptas- chool.indigo.ca for online fundraising is open to any school that registers, only one school is sponsored by its local Indigo bookstore. This year, that school is St. Catherine of Alexan- dria Elementary School on Barber Drive. This means that cashiers will ask every client if they'd like to do- nate. An assortment of well-loved raggedy books from the school library is on display at the store. The other schools using this fundraising platform are Park, Harrison and Jo- seph Gibbons Public Schools. St. Catherine will re- ceive fundraising dollars contributed by customers in store or online. A 30 per cent discount will be ap- plied when shopping using program donations. "We believe that the right book at the right mo- ment can change a child's life forever, and yet too many children in high- needs elementary schools have limited access to books due to insufficient funding. All children de- serve access to compelling books that can inspire them to fall in love with reading and to become en- gaged learners," said Ariel Siller, executive director of the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. Many school budgets only allow for one new li- brary book a year for every three children. Adopt a School aims to help provide much-needed resources for schools across the country. There are three ways that the community can support schools online: Book Bonus: For every two books donated online, the Love of Reading Foun- dation will donate a bonus book, up to 100 books. Tell a Story, Give a Sto- ry: Every time you post a story to Adopt a School profile, the Love of Reading Foundation will donate one book in support of the school library, up to 20 books. Adopt a School Story Contest: "Heart" your fa- vourite story to help a school for a chance to win big! The five most-loved stories in each province will be entered into a ran- dom draw for a chance to win a $2,500 Indigo eGift- card to purchase books for their adopted school. The remaining four top "heart- ed" schools in each prov- ince will win a $500 Indigo eGiftcard to purchase books. Choose wisely be- cause you only get one shot to "Heart" a story.
