There was a time, nearly 30 years ago, when the heating and air condition- ing company was just one man and a truck. Georgetown is mourn- ing the loss of that man. Keith Vaters, owner of Asbuilt comfort care moved to Ontario in 1987. The native of St. John's, N.L. was a marine engi- neer, who sought work far from the coast when jobs dried up. "There was a lot of stuff he was really good at," said his wife Robynne Vaters. Vaters was a master electrician, had a degree in marine engineering from Memorial University, as well as countless hands-on skills. After moving to George- town with his two young daughters Christina and Chelsea, he started Asbuilt Comfort Care. "He made it his mission to know everyone in town," said Christina, remember- ing how her dad would talk to everyone he could, how his charisma drew people in. "He really loved the guys who worked for him," she said. "He taught a lot of people a lot of things about the trade." His daughter Chelsea remembers his ingenuity and cleverness. Before moving to Georgetown they lived in an apartment in Toronto. One hot summer, Vaters rigged an air conditioning system out of an old foun- tain by reversing the flow and hooking it up to the bathroom. His two daughters spent years working for the fami- ly business, and Christina even remembers her dad putting her face on a bill- board for an Asbuilt Com- fort Care advertisement. "He took huge pride in his daughters," said Ro- bynne. Christina now works as a manager at an insurance company and Chelsea is working on a PhD at West- ern University. "When it counted, he was warm and soft," said Christina. "We were his princesses." Vaters and his wife Ro- bynne celebrated their third wedding anniversary in September. "The smile, he had this big, beautiful smile," she said, remembering the first time she saw him.
