But in a year from now, he may no longer be able to climb the steps to his neighbours' front doors. The senior kindergar- tener was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dys- trophy (DMD) at three years old, and since the di- agnosis, his parents Mark and Meghan have been finding ways to raise mon- ey for research and raise awareness in their commu- nity. The van Asseldonks are hosting their second annu- al Isaac's Trek for Treats event in Acton on Oct. 27, with proceeds going to- ward Jesse's Journey, the only Canadian charity that solely funds DMD re- search. "The ability to get mon- ey toward research, espe- cially for such a rare dis- ease, it's so important, oth- erwise nothing gets devel- oped. By supporting Jesse's Journey we see medical research going on in Canada," Mark said. Meghan added that the work Jesse's Journey has done over the years pro- vides their family with hope for a better future, both for their son and other children who have been di- agnosed. Mark and Meghan raised $9,000 for the charity in the event's inaugural year, and hope to reach $10,000 this year. But aside from their fundraising goal, the pair says they hope to be able to educate local residents about DMD. "We want to educate our community about DMD so that as Isaac gets older, and he is seen around the com- munity, people know just a little bit about what his life is like and a little bit about this rare genetic disorder," Meghan said, adding the event is meant to also offer support to local families facing challenges with the same disorder. "Accessibility is a big deal," she said. "Our home is located in an area where at every house, you have to go up about three or four steps to access it. Many people have taken the rail- ings off of their stairs as they changed their land- scape, which makes it diffi- cult for Isaac to trick-or- treat in our area. And so, we are looking at within the next year or so, that he may not be able to trick-or- treat any longer where we live." Isaac's Trek for Treats was created with Isaac's love for Halloween in mind. This year, the event will in- clude a raffle for Toronto Maple Leaf tickets and a signed Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) jersey, as well as a silent auction with items provided by local sponsors. The event will take place at Tanners Drive Park, starting at 10 a.m. on Oct. 27 (parking at Acton Arena). There will be four separate age categories and two distances, as well as a special 100-metre trek. For further informa- tion, visit https:// www.facebook.com/ events/1816615295118914/.
