Nov. 17, starting at Guelph Street and Sinclair Ave- nue, running down Mill It's a Christmas tradi- tion that has put smiles on faces for generations. This year, the George- town Santa Claus parade will be returning to town with a special Vintage Christmas theme, getting in touch with the roots of the event from decades ago. "This year I've asked people to be a little more creative," said organizer Louie Violo, with the Lions Club of Georgetown. Each year, about 70 dif- ferent floats are signed up for the evening tour through the streets of downtown Georgetown that draws nearly 15,000 spectators. "Just seeing the smiles on kids' faces," Violo said is the most rewarding part of the entirely volunteer-led event. Violo says the organiz- ing committee still needs volunteers to help with the parade, traffic on the pa- rade route and more. "We're trying to keep this tradition going," he said, noting that the group has about 35 of the 70 to 80 volunteers needed. "This is where we live, work and play. It's just something for them to look forward to," said Violo. "It's bringing people to- gether, lifting their spir- its." With Vintage Christ- mas theme, he said, floats and decorations will be reminiscent of the 1950s and 1960s holiday celebra- tions. "What was it like in sim- pler times?" he said, noting that the theme will mean different things to every- one. "We just want people to have a sense of hope." The Georgetown Lions Club is always looking for members and volunteers. The club meet above the Mold-Masters SportsPlex on the first and third Mon- days of the month. The Santa Claus parade will be held on Saturday, Street into the downtown before ending at the fair- grounds.
