Ray Lavender/photo At sunset on Nov. 11, starting in Newfoundland, churches across the nation will be ringing their bells 100 times to commemorate the 100th year since the treaty that ended the First World War was signed. Called the Bells of Peace initiative, the tribute was formed by the Royal Cana- dian Legion in partnership with the federal govern- ment. Halton Hills churches will be paying tribute by ringing their bells, begin- ning at 4:58 p.m. "This is so vitally impor- tant - and emotionally im- portant," Ray Clarke of the Royal Canadian Legion in Georgetown said, adding that his father was a veter- an of the First World War and his two brothers served in the Second World War. "To the community it should be quite emotional, too." This initiative will fol- low a ceremony at Remem- brance Park, beginning at 4:30 p.m., held by the Georgetown Legion. The ceremony will include the royal anthem, inspiration- al words by Rev. Peter Bar- row, a reading of the names of veterans of the First World War by Ray Clarke, the playing of The Last Post, and a moment of si- lence, followed by the Act of Remembrance, flag-rais- ing and O Canada.
