3| The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,N ovem ber 8,2018 theifp.ca Peter Mckeown sat in his Georgetown apartment scrolling through his phone, looking at photos of his son Derrick and his grandson Joshua. He stopped on one photo of the two holding hands, explor- ing the outdoors in match- ing polo shirts. "Derrick loved Joshua to no end," Mckeown said. "They are carbon copies of each other." Derrick was fatally shot in Brampton on Sept. 2, in what Peel police have called one of two targeted and re- lated attacks. Joshua's mother Jessica was shot just hours before Derrick, in the first incident. She has survived. Mckeown helped Der- rick and Jessica care for Joshua since the child was two months old. "Joshua and I have been together ever since," he said. "The parents were here but I watched him a good majority of the time." Now, in the aftermath of the family's tragedy, Mcke- own says he may be caring for his six-year-old grand- son more than ever. Mckeown gestures to a small vial of his son's ashes hanging around his neck. "It's been a full 180 losing Derrick. He was my only son," he said. "This helps." "I got a little one for Josh- ua too in the shape of a mo- torbike," he added. "His dad used to take him dirt biking on a little electric bike." Mckeown says though he is unsure what the future holds for him and his grand- son, he has begun to think about the next steps, launching a GoFundMe page, with the intention of raising some money to help Joshua with his education- al needs in the coming years. Along with the Go- FundMe page, Georgetown business Art Effects will be raffling off a piece of art on Dec. 15, with all proceeds go- ing to Joshua. Tickets are on sale now for five dollars each. The piece of art, titled South to the Village, is a lim- ited edition, signed and numbered print by David Vance. The artwork and the frame have a retail value of $500. Art Effects is located at 360 Guelph St. #37 in Georgetown. For further in- formation, visit www.artef- fectsframing.ca/.
