"A lot of effort goes into the floats each year and I think a lot of groups are hold- ing their descriptions tight to their chest," parade chair Al Scott laughed. "The appli- cations that I've gotten have very minimal information. " Scott, who has been in- volved in the Acton parade for 13 years now, says this year, the committee has teamed up with the Acton Christmas Hamper pro- gram to add a food drive to the festivities, in an effort to donate to those in need in the community. The initiative is a collabo- ration with Sobeys; the Sal- vation Army; St. Vincent Charities with St. Joseph, Patron of Canada Church; the Knights of Columbus; and the Rotary Club. Spectators are welcome to bring non-perishable food items or a cash donation to the parade and Sobeys per- sonnel will be walking along the route with shopping carts collecting the dona- tions for the Hamper pro- gram, Scott said. "Through teaming up with the hamper program, we want residents to realize the importance of family. We want them to realize the im- portance of people not going without, and helping out our neighbours," he added. "All of these charity groups do a lot of amazing work in our community to help every- body." The Acton parade will be- gin at 1 p.m. on Nov. 17. The parade route runs from Queen Street and Acton Boulevard through town, ending at Prospect Park. The Acton Santa Claus parade will be taking place on Nov. 17, beginning at 1 p.m. Ray Lavender/photo ACTON SANTA CLAUS PARADE BRINGING HOLIDAY MAGIC TO TOWN VERONICA APPIA vappia@metroland.com COMMUNITY
