In the wake of a fatal Nov. 5 accident in Oakville that saw a 27-year-old Mis- sissauga man killed and a 22-year-old Welland man charged with impaired driving causing death, Crime Stoppers of Halton is asking residents to help police get impaired drivers off the streets. The non-profit, non-po- lice organization that en- courages members of the public to anonymously communicate information regarding criminal activi- ty, in exchange for cash, emphasized that if resi- dents suspect an impaired driver on the road they should call 911 to report it directly and immediately to police. However, if residents know of or suspect a habit- ual impaired driver and wish to report them, but re- main anonymous they can contact Crime Stoppers. Halton Crime Stoppers director David Wood noted that so far this year, im- paired driving tips to Hal- ton Crime Stoppers have resulted in licence suspen- sions, criminal charges, ve- hicle impoundments, and several other Highway Traffic Act offences. He argued those tips di- rectly helped improve the safety of local roads and communities, and may have prevented the next horrific, heartbreaking and completely prevent- able tragedy. "Our mission is to re- duce crime in Halton Re- gion through community education and engagement in partnership with the public, the police, and the media, and by providing citizens the ability to pro- vide information with guaranteed anonymity to deter and solve crime, with rewards offered for tips that lead to an arrest," said Wood. "We appreciate the im- paired driving tips we re- ceive from the public and are proud that these tips can and do directly trans- late into effective action by Halton police to get im- paired drivers off our roads." He said there are no shortage of reasons for res- idents to participate with Halton police, noting there have been 500 impaired driving arrests in Halton so far this year- a number that is only expected to increase as the holiday season ap- proaches. Tips can be submitted to Halton Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222- TIPS (8477) or by visiting www.haltoncrimestopper- s.ca. NEWS SUSPECT A HABITUAL IMPAIRED DRIVER IS OPERATING IN HALTON?
