3 | The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,January 10,2019 theifp.ca Georgetown's Mold Ho- trunner Solutions has been purchased by Las Vegas- based Westfall Technik, but rather than moving, the company said the sale will allow it to expand its local operation. Mold Hotrunner Solu- tions (MHS) specializes in hot runner and injection moulding technology for precision plastic parts, some as small as a grain of salt. MHS recently intro- duced a new line of injec- tion moulding machines (the M3 series) featuring patented technology to manufacture micro-sized plastic parts without scrap, dramatically reducing the cost of medical device pro- duction when using expen- sive resins. MHS' parts are used in medical devices, in- cluding insulin syringes and inhalers. "The M3 really caught our attention at NPE 2018 (a plastics industry trade show)," said Westfall Tech- nik CEO Brian Jones. "We were excited to discover the possibilities of this new micro-moulding approach. Keeping ahead of critical industry needs, such as miniaturization, is very important in our busi- ness." The company, located on Armstrong Avenue, also produces larger moulds used in the automotive and packaging industries. "This is a global indus- try and internationally this area is very well recog- nized as being a big part of the industry's history," said Jörg Schmidt, the di- rector of strategic market- ing and business develop- ment. "Most of our people live and work here." Jones said as part of Westfall, MHS will be able to more quickly scale up its manufacturing capabilities. As a result, Schmidt said the company will be looking to expand its work- force, particularly in the areas of assembly and ma- chining, and engineering and design. He said the company does not disclose the number of people it cur- rently employs. MHS was founded in Georgetown by Harald Schmidt in 2002. Schmidt serves as the president of the previously family-op- erated company. MHS launched a Euro- pean subsidiary based in Würzburg, Germany in 2015. Trade magazine Ca- nadian Plastics reported the company had a record year in 2016 with revenue increasing by 40 per cent. "We're very proud to be joining forces with such an experienced and passion- ate team of plastics ex- perts," Harald Schmidt said in a release announc- ing the sale. "What Westfall is building is truly remark- able and unlike anything I've seen in my long career in this industry. Their vi- sion is unique and compel- ling and makes perfect sense. We're very excited to be a part of this." "The addition of MHS further strengthens the comprehensive manufac- turing capabilities being assembled across the fast- growing Westfall portfo- lio," said the Westfall Tech- nik statement. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
