After tabulating the public consultation results from the past month, Halton Hills Council voted to listen to the majority, opting in to hosting cannabis re- tail stores in town. Senior planning adviser Su- san Silver presented the survey results to council on Jan. 21, indi- cating that 61 per cent of partici- pants favoured opting in, 37 per cent did not and two per cent had no opinion. The survey was conducted on- line and at pop-up stations throughout Halton Hills. The online survey also re- vealed residents are most con- cerned about the proximity of po- tential cannabis stores to schools, youth facilities and day- care centres. Council initially planned to run a public consultation session from January until March, in- cluding two in-person open hous- es, but after being urged by the public at a Dec. 17 council meet- ing, it decided to begin public consultation immediately and come back to council on Jan. 21. Most councillors approved the survey results, but a few re- mained unconvinced.
