33 | The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,June 20,2019 theifp.ca Georgetown's Jack Har- rison dedicated his life to serving others. Whether you look at his 52 years of military service or extensive list of ways he volunteered in the commu- nity for decades, it's safe to say the 85-year-old gave back more than most. Harrison's efforts were recently recognized when he received the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers - an honour bestowed annually by the Canadian governor general to recognize those who've made a significant and continual contribu- tion to their community. The medal was present- ed to Harrison recently during the Georgetown Ar- my Cadets 46th annual in- spection, shortly before he passed away. The local man died suddenly on June 14 following the dis- covery of a brain bleed that he was unable to recover from. Days before he passed, he told the Independent that he was "really sur- prised and very grateful" to receive the award. The retired major's list of volunteer activities is longer than most resumes and includes a variety of ways he gave to Boy Scouts of Canada, the Georgetown Youth Soccer Association, Georgetown Fall Fair and St. John Ambulance. He al- so devoted much of his time to the Royal Canadian Legion, Army Cadet League of Canada, Veter- ans Affairs Canada and the Lorne Scots (Peel, Dufferin and Halton regiment). Harrison was born in Great Britain and joined the army cadet corps of the West Yorkshire Regiment at the age of 13, going on to complete over five decades of military service. In his civilian career, Harrison was employed by Enbridge Consumers Gas for 34 years as a supervisor in construction and main- tenance.
