Ontario Green party leader Mike Schreiner stopped by Georgetown last week to host a town hall meeting alongside federal Green candidate Ralph Martin. The event at St. John's United Church drew dozens of party supporters, who asked questions on everything from federal funding for the media to cli- mate change. During the session Martin led the audience in singing, "This little light of green, I'm going to let it beam" to the tune of This Little Light of Mine. The two men were joined by Spencer Lippa, a 12- year-old Georgetown boy who's also the Green par- ty's youngest member. Here are three interesting quotes from the evening. Mike Schreiner: "When Elizabeth May launched this campaign she argued this is the most important election in Canadian history, and she's right. When the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report came out last fall and scien- tists said if we don't cut global climate pollution in half by 2030, we're going to unleash climate catastro- phe. But the news media failed to report that the sci- entists also said if we do not reverse the upward trend of global greenhouse gas emissions starting in 2020, there's no way we're going to cut climate pol- lution in half by 2030. And the last time I checked, 2020 is three months away." Ralph Martin: "The Green party is strongly in favour of protecting and maintaining clean water: our water, which is a public trust. Recently I saw a mural by a young artist and it had birds and trees and flowers, and off to the side there was a cloud, and in the cloud it said climate change, but they had stroked out the word 'climate' and put 'human'. If we want to deal with climate change, we really need hu- man change. I think it's really appropriate to listen to these young people and that insight." Spencer Lippa: "Why do I give away half of my allowance (to the Green party)? It's because I need the Green party to win. The people and animals who call this planet home need the Green party to win. We all need the Green party to win."
