All are welcome. A Georgetown man was in- spired by the Tell and Sell group on Facebook to write a musical about Georgetown. Sean Grendus, a former OHL winger turned preschool teacher, now turned playwright, is putting the finishing touches on his first musical. "The music is all based on songs from 1977," Grendus said. The play is divided into two acts: the first is set on prom night in 1977, and focuses on six students who have just graduated from high school. The second half of the play re- visits the same students but 40 years later. "We see how far they've gone and what they've done with their lives," Grendus said. While Grendus and his wife moved to Georgetown three and a half years ago, he said the inspira- tion for the musical came from the Georgetown Tell and Sell Facebook group. "This place is different," Gren- dus said. "The people of this town make it that way for better or for worse." Grendus posted to the group looking to research the period and said the response has been really good. "One post had 188 responses," Grendus said. "People have been private messaging me to help." The play started as a personal project, but the support Grendus said he received from the group started to push his project forward. "I think what I've got is pretty funny," he said. Though he's never written a mu- sical, Grendus said he is constantly writing. "I've written lots of children's books for myself and my son," he said. "When I'm at home, I'm writ- ing away, either a poem or a song or a story, but nothing of this magni- tude." Aside from writing, Grendus said he sees himself as a bit of a mu- sician. "Musically, I'm kind of like Weird Al," Grendus said. "I've al- ways loved music and I've always fancied myself a bit of a singer, but I like to do impressions and match exactly what the voice sounds like." The songs in Grendus' play use real melodies, but change the lyrics to push the story forward. "Right now, I'm about 90 per cent of the way through writing," Gren- dus said. All the songs are written, with a portion of the storyline left to com- plete, but the next steps are a bit of a mystery to the novice playwright. "I'd like to take it to a playhouse or a high school," he said. "Now that it's written, what do I do now?" Grendus said he is seeking help to bring the completed play to life. Grendus can be reached at gren- dus@hotmail.com.
