Despite a year Rick Bonnette characterized as unpredictable, the Halton Hills mayor said the town was "successful beyond ex- pectations" in 2019. The main source of the unpre- dictability was the provincial re- view that could have resulted in Halton Hills being amalgamated with neighbouring municipali- ties. Bonnette told the members of the Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce during the Mayor's Christmas Luncheon that the town was vocal in its opposition to any changes to its government structure. He pointed out that if the re- view was to find efficiencies, the town was already looking for them. He pointed to the Halton Hills Fire Department joining with Burlington and Oakville for a centralized dispatch and the Halton Hills Hydro's membership in GridSmartCity, a group of 14 municipal utilities that uses col- laborative purchasing to reduce costs. The province ultimately decid- ed against amalgamating any municipalities. The town also saw a resolution to the employment land in its pre- mier gateway to replace the land it was forced to set aside for a po- tential GTA west corridor high- way. The province withdrew its ap- peal for an official plan amend- ment, giving the town the green light to develop 185 acres. "These dormant lands are now ripe for a huge financial invest- ment in Halton Hills," Bonnette said. "(The province) recognized the value of opening these em- ployment lands to economic de- velopment." Bonnette said this will provide another boost to the town, which has seen the highest job growth rate (14.4 per cent) in Halton over the past five years. He said it will also help maintain its industrial/ commercial to residential ratio, with five million square feet of in- dustrial/commercial buildings in NEWS Halton Hills mayor Rick Bonnette said the town accomplished a lot in 2019 despite the uncertainty surrounding the possibility of amalgamation.
