Local fire officials say that dis- carded smoking materials started a recent house fire in Acton. The Halton Hills Fire Depart- ment investigated the blaze that spread quickly and caused in ex- cess of $100,000 damage to a home on Acton Boulevard in the early hours of Dec. 16. Halton Hills Fire Chief Harry Olivieri says the fire originated in the basement in an area where dis- carded smoking materials were found by investigators. The couple living inside made it out unscathed with their dog. The family cat was originally missing and later found dead in the home. "Working smoke alarms alert- ed the resident in sufficient time to evacuate the home safely," said Olivieri. "Working smoke alarms save lives." Since the fire, the community has been rallying to support the family. Appeals on social media for needed items are being answered and Cody's Cows in Acton is serv- ing as a location for people to drop off donations. "They have lost everything," said Cody's Cows co-owner Shan- na Maltby. "They are very over- whelmed with everything right now, but are very grateful for the community and all the support they are receiving." Cody's Cows is located at 13959 3rd Line, Acton.
