Limited time offer Bell times at 18 schools within the Halton District School Board will be al- tered come September. Route efficiencies, safe- ty concerns, and the board's efforts to steamline school hours with two, 40- minute nutritional breaks (instead of one 50-minute and one 40-minute break) at all elementary schools over the next couple of years, are behind the ad- justments. As of the start of the 2020/2021 school year, the following are the schools affected and the proposed hours: Silver Creek Public School: 8:40 a.m.-3 p.m. EW Foster Public School: 8:45 a.m.-3:05 p.m. JM Denyes Public School: 8:50 a.m.-3:10 p.m. WI Dick Public School: 8:15 a.m.-2:35 p.m. Ryerson Public School: 8:40 a.m.-3 p.m. Tecumseh Public School: 8:50 a.m.-3:10 p.m. John T. Tuck Public School: 9:20 a.m.-3:40 p.m. Mohawk Gardens Public School: 8:30 a.m.-2:50 p.m. Tom Thomson Public School: 9:20 a.m.-3:40 p.m. Glenview Public School: 9:20 a.m.-3:40 p.m. Maplehurst Public School: 9:15 a.m.-3:35 p.m. Emily Carr Public School: 8:30 a.m.-2:50 p.m. Munn's Public School: 8:45 a.m.-3:05 p.m. River Oaks Public School: 8:45 a.m.-3:05 p.m. Sheridan Public School: 9:05 a.m.-3:25 p.m. Posts Corners Public School: 9 a.m.-3:20 p.m. Dr. David R. Williams Public School: 9:25 a.m.-3:45 p.m. The only high school on the list is Craig Kielburger Secondary School which will see a slight adjustment in its bell times: 8 a.m.-2:34 p.m. to address safety con- cerns with the nearby French Catholic elementa- ry school. Oakville trustee Kelly Amos voiced concern that no adjustment was made for delayed starting times for high school students, to accommodate teen sleep patterns which conflict with early bell times. "To do what's best for students and have them all learn the best, we have to try and make some accom- modation at some point," said Amos. Up to 40 schools could be impacted by one high school bell time change, so it's a more complex pro- cess, said Roxana Negoi, Superintendent of Busi- ness Services. With the bell time changes there is an antici- pated savings of almost $500,000. BELL TIMES CHANGING FOR MANY PUBLIC SCHOOLS KATHY YANCHUS kyanchus@metroland.com NEWS
