The Halton community has done an incredible job working together to flatten the COVID-19 curve. The good results we are seeing has moved us into Stage 3, reopening more businesses and public spaces, and increasing limits on social gatherings. To reopen as safely as possible and ensure we keep moving forward, it is now mandatory for individuals five years of age and up to wear a face covering or non-medical mask in certain indoor public places, with some exemptions. Just like we have done throughout this pandemic with washing hands, physical distancing and staying home when sick, I know that our community will continue be supportive and protect one another. To learn more, visit halton.ca/COVID19 or call 311. Please contact us, as soon as possible, if you have any accessibility needs at Halton Region events or meetings. Meetings at Halton Region Regional Council meetings are taking place through web conferencing until further notice. Videos will be posted to halton.ca. Gary Carr Regional Chair Reopening Halton Region safely KeyMap A Special Investigation Unit (SIU) investigation into an injury sustained during an incident at a Georgetown residence will not result in criminal charges for the officers involved. On Jan. 22, Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) officers were dispatched to a residence regarding a report of a 46-year- old man in mental distress with firearms in the home. The man sustained a fractured kneecap during the arrest poten- tially related to bullets fired from an Anti Riot Weapon ENfield (ARWEN). As a result of the investiga- tion, Joseph Martino, director of the SIU, determined no officers involved in the arrest had com- mitted a criminal offence in rela- tion to the injury. "I am unable to find that the force used against the complain- ant was excessive," wrote Marti- no in his decision. The complainant, one civilian, and six witness officers were in- terviewed by the SIU. The subject officer, the officer who fired the weapon, declined to be interviewed and did not sub- mit notes. The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or alle- gations of sexual assault. NEWS An Anti Riot Weapon ENfield (ARWEN) was used during an altercation with a Georgetown man in January. The SIU deemed the use of force reasonable during the incident.
